AVID Program Description - AVID's goal is to prepare students in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility.  It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap.  Not only are students enrolled in some of our school's toughest classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement, but also in the AVID elective.  In AVID, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.  Their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.

AVID Student Description - AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the determination to work hard.  These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential.  Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families.  AVID students may also have extenuating circumstances in their family or personal lives that mitigate their academic and college going support.  Most important is the student's level of determination to succeed via their own efforts.

AVID Recruitment Process - New students may join Poway AVID during one of two Recruitment periods: in the spring of the student's 8th grade year moving to 9th grade or in the spring of the student's 9th grade year moving to 10th grade.  We do not actively recruit 10th graders moving into their 11th grade year.  As part of Recruitment, students are asked to submit an application that includes a brief essay and schedule an interview.  AVID Teachers and Counselors assess student data such as GPA, STAR Test Scores, Parent Education Level and the Essay as well as interview each student.  Our Recruitment goal is to best identify student's who fit the AVID Student Description.
