Community Service Opportunities

Poway High School does not have a community service requirement for graduation. Community service for school credits (such as peer counseling, AVID, or other community service related organizations) is defined as doing something on a volunteer basis that directly benefits the community. For example, teaching Sunday School only benefits a church so that would NOT be considered community service although working with a church to feed the homeless WOULD count. Babysitting for family members wouldn't be considered community service although babysitting for free for a neighbor or at a community event would count. It is recommended that students keep track of their own hours throughout high school, as many colleges and scholarships ask for the number of hours which students volunteered. The attached form (PDF below) can be used for keeping track of hours.

Poway Girls Softball League
The Poway Girls Softball League Concession needs Winterball volunteers and would greatly appreciate any assistance from Poway High School students.
 
Poway Girls Softball Snack Shack/Concession Stand
 
The Snack Shack is located at the Aubrey Park in Poway.  This position works as a team with other parent volunteers during each shift. 
 
  • There will always be 1 adult volunteer at the Snack Shack to assist volunteers.
  • Duties to include: Selling food and drinks at the counter, and cleanup.
  • Skills Gained: Customer Service, Money Handling, Stocking and Organization.
  • Industry: Food and Beverage

Sunrise Senior Living
Sunrise Senior Living in Sabre Springs is looking for student volunteers to enhance their intergenerational activity programs.

Salvation Army Family Store
The Salvation Army Poway Family Store helps to fund programs here in San Diego County that Transform Lives & Reunite Families.  A special volunteer orientation is done at the Poway Family Store for Poway residents.  As one of our volunteers, you would be helping to stock shelves, merchandise goods, and greet customers.  
 
Helen Woodward Animal Center - camp volunteers
Applications are available for being a volunteer during school breaks.  Applicants must be between 14-18 years old. During the summer camps, volunteers need to commit for the entire week but during breaks can volunteer for one or more days.  
 
Scripps Hospital La Jolla
Scripps Prebys Cardiovascular Institute is looking for volunteers who are at least 15 years old and are able to commit to at least two hours per week and volunteer a total of 100 hours.  See attached flyer for more information.
Special Friends  Foundation
A local non-profit home for women with developmental/ cognitive disabilities, is looking for students to volunteer to work at their house (with staff present) for: arts & crafts, cooking and making cookbooks, social skills, etc.  Contact Geri Wuillmier, [email protected] or 858-312-1687
 
City of Poway Teen Volunteer Program

Hospice Teen Volunteer program
Hospice Teen Volunteers (HTV), work directly with hospice patients, their families, and the community. Teen volunteers supply caring hands-on companionship and support. With specialized training they can provide complementary therapies involving art, music, Reiki, yoga, pet visits, and aromatherapy, which speak to the spirit as well as the body. They work in the office, sit on our teen volunteer board, serve as hospice ambassadors and act as spokespersons and advocates for hospice care.

Library Volunteers
The Poway Library is looking for teen volunteers to attend their teen advisory group meetings, shelve books, assist with programs, etc. Volunteers over 14 must have a background check and medical exam (the County will pay for it). Contact the Poway Library at 858-513-2900.

Tutor at PHS
Peers tutor in many subject areas; freshmen will generally not be assigned to tutor peers; freshmen should apply to tutor at an elementary or middle school. Contact the Counseling Office for more information.

Various duties at Pomerado Hospital
Pomerado Hospital Auxiliary has a wide variety of opportunities for students. You must attend a training class and have a TB test. Student volunteers call 760-739-3080.

Feed Homeless

Collect and/or deliver blankets
Collect blankets for Mexico. You may just collect, but you can also join the group going to Tijuana to deliver the blankets. (Blanket collection can be ongoing.), Phil Harris, FFCC (Family and Friends Connection Center), [email protected] or 858-451-1839

San Diego's Fight Against Hunger
On-going help raising funds for orphans in Tanzania. FFCC packages food to send to Africa; is working on building a dormitory for school girls; education; etc., Phil Harris, FFCC (Family and Friends Connection Center), [email protected] or 858-451-1839

Walk and work with dogs and/or cats
After an orientation day, you can walk and help care for dogs at the Escondido Humane Society.
